Mark Webber visits Highlands

27/01/2016 12:24pm

Mark Webber.

217 starts, 42 podiums, 13 pole positions, 19 fast laps and 1047.5 points in a F1 career that spanned 11 years is but one way to describe Mark Webber, the other way is when you met him in person unexpectedly. As was the case on Saturday when he and partner Ann called into Highlands.

With a walk through the museum, stopping to admire the numerous canvas pictures displayed with aspects of F1 racing throughout the years, and to hear Mark talk so passionately of the past era almost longing to have been part of those days, the raw horsepower produced by an engine basically strapped to the back of a man best describes the difference in technology from what Mark last drove in F1.

The chance to drive Mark around the track and hear his feedback, commenting on aspects of other tracks and comparing Highlands to the Red Bull Ring and Jonathan Palmer's circuits in the UK, going as far as to say these were the three best set ups he had seen has cemented Highlands on the International must do list.

As well as being team mates with New Zealand’s Brendon Hartley in the WEC (World Endurance Championship), and to have secured that Championship last year, but also to be the manager and mentor of our own up and coming F1 star Mitch Evans, Mark has in a roundabout way, a Kiwi connection, and being a Tasmanian Aussie believe they are closer to NZ than them.

It is a privilege and pleasure to have these International drivers visit, comment and depart Highlands with all the admiration of a facility that had a vision and has now started to achieve it.
