Pick up your bike from Highlands and set off through the vineyards of Bannockburn before hitting the new trail as it weaves its way around the shores of Lake Dunstan.

Hire anytime from 9am. Bike hires that start at 9am include exclusive access to the Highlands Track during The Power Hour! 

Your hire is a full day bike hire so you can take your time and stop along the trail to really enjoy the majestic scenery.

Once you arrive at Clyde, make your way to the Trail Journeys depot to drop off your bikes. The Trail Journeys team will take care of getting your bikes back to the Highlands depot. If you require transport back to Cromwell, you add this to your booking for $20 per person.

Full Day hire

Enjoy the local trails all the way out to Pisa Moorings and Smiths Way. 

Hire anytime from 9am. Bike hires that start at 9am include exclusive access to the Highlands Track during The Power Hour! 

Please do not use this booking option if you wish to ride the Lake Dunstan Trail, this option is intended for riding in and around Cromwell and Bannnockburn only. You are required to return the bikes back to Highlands.

The Power Hour

Operates from 9am – 10am daily – bookings required
This is your ticket to exclusive, at your own pace access to the scenic Highlands Track. The quiet and tranquillity of the Highlands track in the morning is unparalleled and you will marvel at the beauty of this magical place that is usually bustling with the sounds of speed!

The track is exclusively yours to spend as much time on during the hour as you like.  Do one lap or 10, take a scenic lap – stopping to take pictures from vantage points that the public usually do not have access to, or put your pedal power to the test to record your fastest lap time.

Things you need to know

Safety

  • Minimum age: 10 years (single) and 6 years (tandem)
  • Minimum height: 140cm (single) and 120cm (tandem)
  • Maximum height: 2m (single)
  • Maximum weight: 120kg (single)
  • Drivers must be aged 16 years and over for the tandem karts
We have a zero tolerance to alcohol on all self drive activities.
Any injuries must be cleared by the Go Kart Team.
Tandem Karts are speed limited to be slower than Single Karts and they are designed for an adult and a child.
Our Go Kart Track is weather dependant.
Driver minimum age is 10 years old and must be over height of 140cm*
Passenger minimum age is 6years old and must be over height of 120cm*
You must arrive and check in at Highlands at least 30 minutes before your booking time.

What to wear

ALWAYS
No loose items or clothing
Ensure long hair is tied up and tucked inside your helmet or down the back of your top.
SUMMER SPECIFIC
Sunscreen for summer Central Otago Sun.
Recommend cotton tees and longer shorts.
Winter specific
Gloves for the cold.

Bookings essential. You are unable to make a Bike Hire reservation online within 24 hours of the beginning of your hire.
Check in 15 minutes before your booking time.
For all bike hires, when arriving at Highlands, please park your vehicle in the first car park off Sandflat Road. Please park here to ensure that you are able to access your vehicle at the end of your Bike Hire.
Hired bikes are not to be relocated back to Highlands using personal transport.
All Bike Hire customers also receive a 50% discount on Museum entry and a 10% discount on all other Highlands activities.

Packed Lunch Options - $20 per person
Option 1 – Ham Foccacia Roll with mixed salad, piece of fruit, bag of chips, bottle of water and full size muffin.
Option 2 – Chicken and salad wrap, piece of fruit, cheese & crackers, bottle of fizz and a sweet slice.
Option 3 – Roast Chicken with salad and balsamic vinaigrette, piece of fruit, cheese & crackers, and a bottle of water.
Lunches must be ordered 24 hours in advance & picked up from the Highlands Cafe on the morning of your hire

What type of bikes are they?​

Our e-bikes are unisex “hardtail” trail bikes – bit of a hybrid between a mountain bike & a commuter bike. Hardtail means no rear suspension!​ ​

How many kilometres is from Highlands to Clyde?

Can I bike to Clyde and then back to Highlands?

If you are planning on completing a return journey via e-Bike (Highlands – Clyde – Highlands), please note that depending on how often you are using the e-Bike power on your bike, the battery may not last for the entire journey. The battery may run out on the return leg and you will need to use your human power to bring yourself home.​ ​

Is the Lake Dunstan Trail suitable for kids?​

It is not suitable or recommended for kids under 10, the trail is quite difficult.​ ​

Is there transport available for around Cromwell?​

No transport is not available around Cromwell, you will need to return the bike to Highlands. ​ ​

Where can I ride to?

Up to Smiths Way via Old Cromwell, Pisa Moorings – 25km 1 way (Approx. 2.5 hours) ​ Old Cromwell – 8kn 1 way (Approx. 1 hour) ​ Cornish Point – 10km 1way (Approx. 1 hour) ​ Highlands to Clyde (Lake Dunstan Trail) – 43km (one way – time varies on stops) ​ Felton Road (end) – 8km 1 way (Approx. 1 hour)
